"Honest review - for anyone who is worried.
I am leaving this for those who are staying in the near future, because this page ruined the run-up to my holiday and I was absolutely dreading it.
This is not to invalidate those who have not had a good experience and I’m sorry that you didn’t have a pleasant stay that has now resulted in raising complaints with your tour operators.
This is just our experience of staying here and people need to hear these experiences too.
We arrived (husband and I) with really low expectations after reading all the reviews but actually we had a great holiday. Our 13 year old son had a great time too (we didn’t talk about any of our concerns in front of him).
*Room*
We booked with Jet2 and had a ‘promotional’ room to sleep 3. The room was on the second floor, it was clean, had loads of space, was a little dated but actually in good condition, and had lots of plug sockets. The fridge and air con worked fine too. We had no issues with ants/bugs. (I took ant traps and bug sprays with me and didn’t need them).
Every day we had the floors swept/moped, and bins were emptied bar one, even on Sunday when we were advised there was no service. The day before we left (Weds) was the day the bins were not done - but it didn’t bother us as we were checking out the next morning. Toilet roll topped up when required. Our sheets were changed every third day as advised in the welcome information. Towels were changed when I placed them in the bath to indicate I wanted clean ones - as instructed on the information sticker in the bathroom.
If we had to pick fault; the air con made a loud noise on occasions (hubby gave it a whack and it stopped), and the beds were firm (this didn’t bother us, it was more our son who prefer a softer mattress) and there was only 1 pillow pp. There was 1 spare we found later, and I’m sure if we had asked they would have given us more.
The drainage wasn’t great when we had a shower and backed up through the little grate - but if we didn’t have water running full pelt (we still had a decent shower), and gave a bit of time between us it was fine. Did any of this ruin our holiday - No.
*Pools*
Pools were great. We didn’t use the small children’s pools so can’t comment on those.
We spent most of our time at the pool where the entertainment was (can’t remember the name of it). Our room was next to this one so we could use our toilet rather than the public ones, which I had read were not the best, although the ones in the main building complex were fine.
We like to have a bit of music to listen to, and when we couldn’t get a sun lounger we sat by the pool bar.
We did go down to the pool where the slides were and stayed for a while, our lad enjoyed them but wasn’t too fussed about going back. Same with the larger Olympic pool.
We used the pool towels from the hotel, they were in good condition, and we changed them for clean ones as often as we liked. We weren’t asked to leave a deposit or given a card, we just asked at the kiosk on our first day and the lady took our room number and explained how it worked. However, when we were checking out my husband saw someone with a towel card and speaking about a deposit. No idea what this was for.
There definitely didn’t feel like there were enough sun loungers or tables and chairs at the pool bar. We didn’t go without a seat, and we did get up early on 3 mornings of our 10 day stay to reserve loungers by the pool when I knew we would be there all day to use them. I didn’t want to go the whole holiday and not have at least a couple of days by the pool.
Again if I was picking fault, the overall cleanliness around the pool area wasn’t the best. Could do with a hose-down of an evening with some soapy water to wash away spilt drinks. The plastic grating around the pool could have done with a scrub. The sun loungers were dated and faded. Did this ruin our holiday - No.
*Entertainment Team*
As a lot of people have already said, they really were great!
They turned up with energy all of the time, they knew the assignment and they absolutely smashed it. The entertainment itself was varied. Even when they have a day off, one of them is around entertaining in some way. For example DJ’ing at the pool.
If I had to pick fault, maybe more information posters around the site with the schedule.
*Food/restaurants and bars*
We always found something to eat. There was plenty of variety. Standard AI selections. We found that the tables were cleared and reset quickly. We sat near a clearing station in one of the restaurants and got a smell of cleaning product/disinfectant, there was a tub of soapy water for the table cloth (I mention this as I had read the tables were not cleaned).
We ate at all the restaurant/snack bars and a variety of times during each service, never had an issue getting a table, and only once there were no plates, but they were out within minutes.
We used all the bars across our stay. Tried all the cocktails too. The Pool bar was the most lively, with music all day. (Although sometimes this competed with the pool music and it felt very separate to the pool - would have been better if this was aligned).
We took our own cups (always do), had no issues having them filled up. Water on tap and could also get our bottles filled up at the bars.
Picking fault; some of the hot foods were done really well and were really tasty, and some not so well, either not cooked well or lacking in flavour (we didn’t experience any raw food).
The layout for some of the food didn’t quite flow in the main resultant. Not sure if this contributes to the feeling of chaos with people walking in all directions. We’ve been to AI where it has felt more organised in its flow.
Did this ruin the holiday - No, but the food was the weakest area for us.
*Staff*
Everyone we came into contact with was helpful, friendly and pleasent.
The plug in our sink got stuck, we reported it to reception at about 7pm and it was fixed by the time we returned to our room at around 11pm.
To be picky, one of the bar men in the main ‘cocktail bar’ was miserable, never cracked a smile. Didn’t ruin the holiday but we made a point saying Hi and smiling every time we saw him around the site!
*Kos and surrounding area*
We loved staying in Kos, we booked a few excursions with Tigaki Express across the road from the hotel, the tours were great, reasonable in price and all the staff we met were also helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The 3 island tour, Kos Island tour, Sunset at Zia and Paradise beach. There are a few companies who offer the same tours, people need to pick what they prefer and within their price ranges. They are all amazing experiences and I believe we would have enjoyed them all regardless. (There is also kos sun prestige tours - I keep seeing great reviews for).
We also took the bus into town a few times and enjoyed a mooch around. We ate and drank in a few places while out and about, and when on the tours - all enjoyable experiences. Shout out to Tortuga Cafe and staff across the road from the hotel, great coffee (according to hubby) and the best baguettes (according to the teenager - but we all really enjoyed the food here).
We met some lovely people during our stay, in and out of the hotel.
Would we return based on our experience?
We are definitely coming back to Kos. Maybe we would return to the hotel, for the price we paid (and in the same room!). I’m intrigued to know after the buyout this year how the hotel will fare in seasons to come and what improvements will be made.
The holiday makers were a large contributor to the overall mess/cleanliness, not tidying away their own rubbish. This isn’t all, as we saw a lot who did, however, it’s those that didn’t and who didn’t supervise younger children. Due to the use of paper plates (for use when not in a restaurant) and disposable plastic cups, they were blown away easily and also just left stacked up lying around the site. It wasn’t for a lack of bins either. Two rooms down from us, left plates and leftover food outside their room every day/night - and people will wonder why there is an ant issue in the room. Children getting drinks/food, then walking off leaving the cups/plates on the floor with what’s left to spill all over the floor. They were old enough to know to put them in the bin.
We also questioned if there were enough staff and if they had the right direction to maintain a clean and organised environment to the standard and to the rules that the hotel advertises. It felt like the staff were spread too thin, and there was a lack of any senior staff overseeing the running of the hotel."
