"– A Four-Star Rating That Falls Short of Expectations
Having recently stayed at Creta Palm, we feel compelled to share our experience, as sadly, what should have been a relaxing and enjoyable holiday was marred by disappointing customer service and facilities that, in our opinion, fell considerably short of the four-star standard advertised.
The Cons – A Disappointing Welcome and Poor Customer Service
Our holiday got off to a thoroughly disappointing start. We arrived at approximately 11.30 pm, tired after our journey and, being in our late 70s, understandably looking forward to reaching our room and finally relaxing.
Having been dropped off by taxi, we were faced with the daunting prospect of negotiating numerous steps whilst struggling with our luggage. There was no assistance offered by the hotel. Fortunately, a kind fellow guest noticed our predicament and came to our aid. Frankly, it was both embarrassing and disappointing that another holidaymaker felt the need to do what we would have expected hotel staff to offer as a matter of basic courtesy.
Having eventually struggled our way to reception, we were greeted not with a warm welcome or even a simple enquiry as to whether we had enjoyed our journey, but with the rather abrupt remark, “You’re late!”
One can only wonder what sort of welcome the hotel considers appropriate for guests arriving after a long journey, particularly when they are elderly. We certainly did not expect a fanfare, but a little warmth, understanding and common courtesy would have gone a long way.
We were then handed our room key and a rather vague map, with instructions on how to find our accommodation. With the grounds poorly lit and the various accommodation blocks difficult to identify, we were left to navigate our way to our room in the darkness, dragging our luggage behind us.
This was hardly the reassuring and welcoming arrival one would reasonably expect from a hotel claiming a four-star rating.
In our experience of hotels of this standard, assistance with luggage and guidance to one’s room are considered fundamental aspects of hospitality, not unreasonable luxuries. At the very least, we would have expected someone to accompany us and ensure that we reached our accommodation safely. The same consideration would have been appreciated when departing.
Unfortunately, our initial impression was not significantly improved by subsequent encounters with reception. The staff we encountered generally appeared sullen, unapproachable and lacking in the warmth and helpfulness that are so important to a guest’s overall experience.
A hotel can have attractive surroundings and comfortable rooms, but it is the people who work there who ultimately shape a guest’s impression. Sadly, the customer relations at Creta Palm left much to be desired.
The Beach and Entertainment – More Disappointments
Another disappointment was discovering that the sunbeds and parasols on the beach were chargeable. Whilst we appreciate that hotels may operate different arrangements for beach facilities, this was an additional expense we had not particularly anticipated from a hotel of this advertised category.
The entertainment was, quite frankly, dire. There was little to inspire or engage us, and the area provided for sitting and relaxing was distinctly underwhelming.
For a hotel marketed as four-star accommodation, we expected a more inviting and comfortable environment in which to unwind and enjoy our evenings. Instead, the facilities in this respect felt decidedly basic and, in our opinion, more reminiscent of a two-star establishment.
It is difficult to understand how the overall experience can justify a four-star rating when such fundamental elements of hospitality, comfort and guest enjoyment appear to have been overlooked.
The Pros – Credit Where It Is Due
To be fair, not everything disappointed us, and there were some genuine positives.
The breakfast was excellent. There was a very good selection of food catering for a variety of nationalities and tastes, and this was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay.
We were also extremely impressed by the standard of housekeeping. Our room was serviced to a very high standard every single day, and we would particularly like to commend the lovely lady responsible for Room 613. She was delightful, and her hard work, attention to detail and pleasant manner deserve recognition.
She was a real credit to the hotel and demonstrated the kind of care and consideration that we had hoped to experience more consistently throughout our stay.
Our Overall Verdict
Creta Palm has some positive attributes, particularly its excellent breakfast and the exemplary standard of housekeeping. However, these positives were overshadowed by our disappointing experiences with reception staff, the lack of assistance on arrival and the underwhelming entertainment and relaxation facilities.
We do not expect to be treated as royalty, nor do we expect unreasonable privileges simply because of our age. However, we do believe that basic courtesy, helpfulness and consideration should be at the heart of any hotel claiming to offer a four-star experience.
Arriving late at night, struggling with luggage up numerous steps and then being left to find our room in the darkness was not only an unpleasant start to our holiday but also an entirely avoidable one.
Four-star hospitality should be about far more than a room key, a breakfast buffet and a rating on a brochure. It should be reflected in the welcome guests receive, the assistance available when needed, the attitude of the staff and the overall quality of the facilities.
Sadly, we felt that Creta Palm failed to deliver on too many of these expectations.
With a more welcoming reception team, a greater emphasis on guest care, better assistance for arriving and departing guests, and improvements to the entertainment and relaxation areas, this hotel could offer a much more satisfying experience.
We left feeling that, although certain members of staff clearly take pride in their work, the overall standard of service did not match the four-star experience we had anticipated.
Would we return? Based on our experience, unfortunately, no."
