"My wife and I celebrated my 50th birthday with a trip to Greece and Italy, and we spent the final five days of our vacation at Canaves Oia Suites. Simply put, it was true perfection. We loved every second of our stay!
I'll admit that when we landed in Santorini, I was a little nervous. The drive from the airport gave me a very different impression of the island than I had imagined. But the moment I walked up the stairs to Canaves Oia and turned the corner toward the reception desk, everything changed. I immediately understood the kind of beauty that simply cannot be captured in photographs. This hotel is a destination in and of itself. The views of the caldera are among the most breathtaking I have ever experienced in my life.
Our flight was delayed, so we arrived after 3 p.m. One thing worth knowing before you book: there are a LOT of steps, both at the hotel and throughout Santorini. The good news? If you explore the island the way you should, you won't need a gym! Getting 20,000 steps a day is easy.
Canaves Oia Suites is not located in the busiest part of Oia, and that was one of the things we loved most about it. A 10–15-minute walk takes you into the heart of town, where you'll find the shops, restaurants, and activity, but you can return to the hotel and immediately feel a sense of peace and tranquility. For us, it was the perfect balance.
We booked a River Pool Suite, which gave us convenient access to a pool right from our room. We didn't use it as much as we might have liked because the water was a little chilly during our October 5–10 visit, but having that private access was still a wonderful feature. The entire property is beautiful, and we felt relaxed from the moment we arrived.
October turned out to be a fantastic time to visit. I personally prefer traveling during the shoulder season because the island is lively without feeling overwhelmingly crowded. We had no trouble getting restaurant reservations, and there were wonderful opportunities to connect with locals and seasonal workers from Santorini and other Greek islands. Those conversations became part of what made the trip so special.
One of my favorite parts of our stay was getting to know the staff, particularly the ladies at the front desk. I wish I had captured their names because they deserve individual recognition! They were absolutely wonderful. My wife and I would sometimes leave early for town or dinner just so we could stop by reception, chat with them, and catch up on our day. They made us feel genuinely welcome, and those little interactions became a highlight of our stay. Let's just say they also had a positive influence on the gratuity we left at the end of our visit!
We loved everything about Canaves Oia Suites. Honestly, we could have happily spent our entire stay lounging by the pool, enjoying the views, and eating at the hotel's incredible restaurant. The property itself is so special that you don't feel the need to be constantly on the go to have an amazing experience.
I do have one small warning for taller guests: watch your head! I'm six feet tall, and I managed to bump my head more than once, particularly when coming out of the River Pool area and in the shower. Some of the cave-style architecture has low ceilings and tight spaces, and the white walls can make it difficult to judge the clearance. It was never a major issue, but it's worth being mindful of your surroundings. And one final piece of advice: Greek wine goes down remarkably easily, so enjoy it responsibly!
Overall, Canaves Oia Suites exceeded our expectations. The setting is extraordinary, the property is stunning, and the staff made us feel like we were staying somewhere truly special. It was the perfect place to end our 50th-birthday celebration, and I would return without hesitation.
If you're considering booking Canaves Oia Suites, do it. You will not be disappointed. Santorini is beautiful, but experiencing it from this hotel made it unforgettable."
