"Stayed here with my wife for three days four nights during the second week of September
Felt the need to write a review of the movenpick Marine and spa in Sousse as it was such a poor experience
We booked this hotel as the reviews seemed quite positive
Ironically a member of staff at the airport and the taxi driver both said that this hotel was fabulous and that we had chosen well……. How wrong they were !!
Unfortunately, everything was negative apart from a few positives
Upon approaching the hotel, it gives you the impression of a high-end hotel and walking through the lobby continues this feeling as it’s probably the best part of the hotel
We arrived late morning and decided to have refreshments at the poolside bar
This is where it first started going wrong
The local lager ( and only one choice at that ) was at best room temperature and quite flat
Not what you want when you’ve just arrived and it’s 30°
Spoke with the bar staff who said that due to the amount of people at the hotel they were struggling to keep the beer and other drinks cool
I must say, walking around the pool towards the bar when we first arrived did not give a great impression
The sunbeds were so close together, you would struggle to walk between them
If you enjoy listening to other peoples music and even reading their book over their shoulder, then this is the place for you
The usual sunbed wars were in operation as witnessed whilst on our balcony from 7 am onwards
I’ll start with breakfast
This is on the lower ground floor and reminded me of a large bus station cafe
It was chaotic at best
Staff were struggling to clear tables fast enough and the plates and cutlery were left for long periods with customers having to sit at tables and wait for them to be cleared before they could start their own breakfast
There were no real fresh berries or nuts to go with cereals or yoghurts and although the yogurts were labelled they all tasted the same namely tasteless
Two of the dishes of hard-boiled eggs labelled five minutes and eight minutes of cooking time had clearly not being cooked long enough and all had to be returned to be re cooked again or thrown away after I pointed out to the waiter that neither were edible
The omeletes. which were made separately were loaded in grease/oil and as a whole the breakfast was pretty poor
The drinks around the bars were undrinkable
There were three alcoholic cocktails and all were spinoffs of sex on the beach, piña colada’s and the like
Not sure what vodka or gin they were serving but it was cheap and tasted like somebody’s home brew
I didn’t see one cocktail shaker whilst I was there it was all made out of pre-made juices… probably the worst cocktails I have ever had the misfortune to sip
No Prosecco or aperol spritz were available at the beach bar and they weren’t on the all-inclusive in any case so were chargeable items
Unless you want their basic poorly made cocktails, local lager or average wine, you have to pay extra
It was also a two tier system in the hotel
One for all inclusive and one for paying guests
you are offered very little in the way of a selection of drinks and food however if you paid as you went, the drinks and food menu choices were far more extensive
For example, if you ordered a pizza as an all-inclusive guest you had a couple of choices but were the size of a small dinner plate but if you paid as you went the pizzas were twice the size with far more ingredients/ choices and other so it made you feel like you were a lower class citizen, even though you had already paid upfront
One thing that really annoyed me was that I expected to be served in a plastic glass around the pool side, what I didn’t expect was to be served repeatedly in the bar area inside the hotel, including the sports bar with the same plastic glasses
They even gave you a plastic whiskey type glass if you were drinking wine,
If you asked for a Glass, the staff get quite annoyed and at one point, one of the bar staff which we believe was the head bar man at the bar opposite the entrance towards the pool almost threw the Glass along the bar at my wife
Having done so a third of the lager spilled out onto the bar itself, so she asked for it to be topped up which angered gum even more
We did complain regularly about the attitude of the staff and their way of dealing with it was to offer you a free meal at one of the à la carte restaurants which you would normally have had to pay for
Having complained to the customer relations man we were even made to point out which bar person it was which was outrageous
Not sure where the à la carte came from, they should just be called restaurants because they were average at best
We were directed to the Japanese restaurant one night after complaining and although the sushi to start with was fine, the main course consisted of pieces of fish fillet and a large amount of rice
No vegetable to be seen anywhere
My main course consisted of strips of chewy beef and again a large amount of rice
The pudding was even worse. It was one slice of pineapple each which was probably from a tin with a scoop of ice cream and some strawberry sauce over the top.
We had another free mail due to the inconsistencies of the hotel and staff which was in the so-called fine dining restaurant
We walked into the restaurant and there was no one there
Luckily, we walked to the right and there was an outside area adjacent to the front garden and road which contained three tables of customers
That meal was much better, but the portions were so large we struggled to finish
We went for a walk one morning just to get a break from the hotel and unfortunately the area I can only describe as a dump
There is rubbish everywhere with lots of hotels left to decay, probably due to the lack of the tourist trade due to the awful incident a few years ago
The larger hotels have clearly taken over and everybody else has suffered as a consequence
There are beggars here and there asking for money
We realised that if you didn’t tip you were treated as a second class guest
We experienced this whilst waiting to be served at bars on numerous occasions even after customers had arrived after us they would be served first because they were paying customers and tipped the staff
Anyone from outside can come in and use the bars and it would appear that the staff knew most of the regular customers and served them first
Theres very little entertainment at the hotel.
It would appear that most customers having eaten and had a few drinks retired to bed early so that they could run the gauntlet of the sunbed towel chase
Another strange observation is that there is no toilet on the ground floor by the pool and beach
if you’re on the beach or near the beach bar or pool you have a fair walk to find a toilet
I can only describe the majority of the staff as being quite arrogant and act as though they don’t really want to be there
We had a fish night on the Saturday, which was much better than the rest of the lunch and evening meals which were very similar with little tweaks here and there
Would I go here again definitely not
This hotel is a beautiful building and the pool and beach are nice however how it’s run is appalling
It could be such a nice hotel with the right staff mentality, but at the moment I wouldn’t set foot in it if you paid me"
