Amsterdam’s cooler, calmer cousin
Utrecht has all the ingredients for a brilliant Dutch city break: wonky old streets, handsome canals, lively cafés, standout museums and a skyline ruled by the Dom Tower. It’s the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands, but it wears its size lightly, with a cosy, walkable centre that feels more “let’s wander and see what happens” than “quick, schedule everything”.
The Oudegracht canal is the star. Its wharf cellars sit down at water level, giving Utrecht a layered, slightly secret feel, with bars and restaurants tucked right beside the canal. Climb the Dom Tower for big city views, head underground at DOMunder for Roman and medieval history, or dive into museums like Centraal Museum, Museum Speelklok and the Miffy Museum. The Rietveld Schröder House adds a hit of UNESCO-listed design brilliance, too.
Food and drink are a proper part of the fun. Expect canal-side lunches, cosy brown cafés, bakeries, craft beer, Indonesian plates, modern European restaurants and snack stops where bitterballen somehow become a legitimate itinerary item.
Utrecht is perfect if you want Dutch charm without the capital-city crush. Canals, culture, coffee, bikes and a little architectural swagger: tiny city-break engine, big personality.
