"I was extremely disappointed by my recent experience at the Crowne Plaza London – Kings Cross/Enfield during a two-day executive training programme attended by senior banking professionals from Ethiopia. The delegation included the President, CEO, and several board directors of a major Ethiopian bank, including individuals with PhDs and a High Court Judge. These were highly respected international guests, yet the level of hospitality and professionalism they received fell far below what one would expect from an IHG-branded hotel. The catering throughout the event was particularly poor. On the first day, one of the lunch options consisted of only six pieces of salmon for the entire group. The second day was only marginally better, with extremely limited choices and uninspiring presentation. Desserts consisted of a small bowl of chopped fruit that genuinely resembled leftovers from breakfast service. Breakfast each morning was equally underwhelming. The selection was remarkably limited compared with virtually every business hotel I have visited during more than 20 years of international consulting and training work across 34 countries, including Ethiopia, China, and many IHG properties worldwide. Fruit options were sparse, salad items were minimal, and the “Full English” selection was restricted to only a few basic items. What was most disappointing, however, was the attitude of staff when dealing with a legitimate customer complaint. One of the senior directors reported that the refrigerator in his room was not functioning. Food stored overnight had spoiled during one of the hottest days of the year in the UK. Reception staff initially refused to believe there was a problem. When a senior university director accompanying the programme asked a receptionist to inspect the room, she was told the receptionist was “too busy.” Eventually, the manager and hotel engineer attended the room. The engineer acknowledged that the refrigerator was not working properly, yet the manager still insisted it was functioning correctly. Astonishingly, the hotel also refused to replace the fridge, claiming that each refrigerator was assigned permanently to a specific room. A subsequent formal complaint email was dismissed with the explanation that only the refrigerator light was faulty — an explanation entirely inconsistent with the spoiled food and the engineer’s comments during the inspection. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I genuinely found this experience embarrassing given the seniority and international status of the guests involved. The combination of poor catering, inadequate customer service, and an apparent unwillingness to acknowledge obvious problems reflected very badly on the hotel. This experience fell far below the standards I would normally associate with the Crowne Plaza or the wider IHG brand."
