easyJet holidays supports UN Tourism ESG Framework to improve tourism sustainability measurement
Tour operator easyJet holidays shares progress on development of UN Tourism ESG Framework, which will enable tourism companies and stakeholders to measure, compare, and meaningfully communicate their sustainability efforts and impacts.
COO Matt Callaghan joined a panel at a UN Tourism side event held alongside the UN Statistical Commission, speaking about how sustainability is embedded as a core easyJet holidaysbusiness metric, the importance of aligning tourism ESG reporting with a global statistics framework, and news on how the ESG framework is progressing.
easyJet holidays has shared progress on the development of a UN Tourism ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses. The tour operator reaffirmed its support for tourism sustainability measurement through theESG Framework for Tourism Businesses, a global initiative designed to harmonise how tourism companies measure and report sustainability impacts.
Speaking at a UN Tourism side event held alongside the UN Statistical Commission, easyJet holidays Chief Operating Officer Matt Callaghan joined a panel with travel industry leaders, which focused on strengthening sustainability measurement across the tourism sector and improving alignment between business ESG reporting and internationally recognised statistical frameworks.
The discussion explored:
Sustainability embedded as a core business metric
At easyJet holidays, sustainability is tracked at board level as a key performance indicator and is directly linked to the company’s annual bonus scheme, alongside metrics such as customer satisfaction. The approach is designed to ensure accountability and embed sustainability across every level of the organisation.
Matt shared that this structure helps ensure sustainability is considered in operational and strategic decision-making.
Aligning tourism ESG reporting with global statistical frameworks
The discussion also explored the importance of aligning tourism ESG reporting with internationally recognised statistical frameworks.
The tourism sector currently lacks a unified ESG reporting framework. This creates challenges for companies seeking to measure progress, compare performance, and communicate sustainability impact consistently.
Matt highlighted the need for the travel sector to measure impacts beyond economic contribution alone, including areas such as community impact, employee wellbeing and environmental performance.
Progress on the tourism ESG framework
So far, through its partnership with UN Tourism, easyJet holidays shared operational insight from across its hotel and destination network, helping ensure emerging ESG reporting frameworks reflect how tourism businesses operate in practice, including the needs of both large operators and smaller partners.
Matt shared how now the framework is progressing towards implementation, the focus has shifted to supporting adoption across the easyJet holidays network.
easyJet holidays is supporting the ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses as part of its wider commitment to improving sustainability across the tourism value chain and strengthening transparency in tourism sustainability reporting.
Speaking at the event, Matt Callaghan emphasised the importance of ensuring sustainability data is practical and usable for tourism businesses operating across complex international supply chains.
“Sustainability data only matters if it changes decisions. A consistent approach to tourism sustainability measurement helps ensure businesses, destinations and governments are working with comparable information and can make better decisions for the long-term resilience of the tourism sector.”
Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Al Nuwais said:
“Tourism is one of the world’s most dynamic economic sectors, and it deserves data systems that reflect its true scale and impact. Strengthening global tourism statistics and linking them with business sustainability reporting helps ensure that decisions across the sector are grounded in reliable, comparable evidence.”
